Building Confidence Through Conversational ESOL
For many migrants, learning English is not just about grammar or vocabulary. It is about confidence. It is about being able to ask for directions, speak to a neighbour, catch a bus, or attend a job interview without fear.
Migrant Haven delivered a series of Conversational ESOL sessions designed to support migrants in developing practical language skills for everyday life. Rather than focusing only on formal classroom learning, the sessions created a relaxed and welcoming environment where participants could practice real-life conversations.
Participants learned how to ask for help in shops, understand transport routes, pronounce commonly used words, and make simple everyday conversations. These small but important skills helped people feel more comfortable navigating their local community.
Over the course of the programme, dozens of community members attended the sessions, many returning week after week as their confidence grew. What started as hesitant conversations gradually turned into lively discussions, laughter, and new friendships.
The success of these sessions showed just how important practical language learning can be. Because of the strong engagement and positive feedback from participants, Migrant Haven has been able to develop additional projects and workshops that continue supporting language development and community integration.
